It's romantic. This is how Anna sees the tradition that Declan finds completely stupid. Anna went out of her way to get to Dublin from the US to propose to her boyfriend Jeremy, who is in Ireland for a medical conference. This is inspired by an Irish tradition that any man who is proposed to on a leap day has no right to decline to it. Anna's father has shared to her about how her grandmother did exactly the same thing years ago, and it has encouraged Anna to do the same after Jeremy failed to pop the question when she expected him to. Unfortunately, Anna ended up in Wales due to weather conditions a few days before leap year. After convincing Declan, a local bar/hotel owner in Cardiff, Wales to drive her to Dublin, the two of them went through a three-day journey to Dublin, which ended up to be the journey of love as they started to get to know each other and fall in love along the way. At the end of the trip, they parted ways once Anna found her way to Jeremy, where she was met with a question and a ring. During their formal engagement party, Anna realizes that it is Declan that she needs, so she goes back to Ireland to be with Declan.
In a wrap, it is romantic indeed. The tradition itself might seem a little too much for any modern gal, but the idea of a girl proposing to a guy is personally quite interesting but not enticing enough. Probably the best thing about the movie, in addition to how pretty Anna is and gorgeous Declan is, is their witty bantering. Couples should be able to understand each other. However, it is not always a requirement that they share the same idea and belief about things. Sometimes, there is a need for differences between the two parties in order for both of them to learn how to compromise for the good of each other and their relationship. It does not take a master to know this. A sustainable and stable relationship is not just about love and all the giddy feelings. It is also about hard work, the dedication to make things work and the commitment to each other.
